Chapter 2
Evaluate Myrtle’s talk of her unhappy marriage. What does she seem to be trying to justify?

38 comments:

  1. Daisy talks about being unhapy in her marriage in order to justify the fact that she is cheating on her husband and is not willing to divorce him first to make it legitimate. She tells stories about him to elicit sympathy such as the fact that he borrowed his wedding tuxedo. When her friend says that she used to be crazy about him she has to deny it in order to make what she is doing look even better. She just either doesn't want to divorce or she knows Tom won't divorce Daisy for her.

  2. Myrtle talks of her unhappy marriage to justify her infidelity. In a discussion with Mrs. McKee, she explains that she married a man who didn't deserve her and that she had been tricked into thinking he was a gentlemen since for their wedding, he borrowed a friend's suit (pg. 35). This is meant to inspire sympathy for Myrtle and provide an explanation for her unfaithful actions. Despite her criticism Myrtle doesn't divorce her husband since Tom isn't willing to part with Daisy to be with her, having gone so far as to lie about his wife's religion to avoid divorce for some unknown reason.

    1. Or is this just the way Myrtle justifies cheating on her husband?

  3. On page 34 Catherine accused Myrtle of being crazy for her husband before their marriage. Myrtle responds by saying the only "crazy" she was, was when she married him. Taking great offense to these accusations and feeling the need to defend herself, Myrtle claims that she was tricked into believing Mr. Wilson was gentlemen, when in reality he didn’t even purchase a suit for their wedding. She tries to draw sympathy from the fact that her husband would dare to borrow a friends suit on his wedding day. Myrtle the suit and Tom refusing to divorce Daisy to justify her cheating on her own husband.

    1. Maybe her husband was simply being thrifty. Suits are expensive.

  4. Myrtle is accused of once loving her husband and being crazy about him but now not. She then starts to use excuses as to why she married him. Saying now that they have an unhappy marriage. An example of this would be when they bring up the fact that he borrowed a friends suit for the wedding. Myrtle tries to turn everything around so that she doesn't seem like the bad one in the situation. But really she is one reason to justify cheating. She also uses the fact that Tom will not divorce Daisy as an excuse to cheat when really it is not an excuse.

    1. I agree. She is justifying her own bad behavior.

  5. I think she is trying to justify whether she really loved Wilson in the first place and from her not know, it is the cause of her behavior. From her point of view, well the way she describes it, it seems like she was tricked into loving Wilson in the first place. Like how she thought Wilson was a gentleman when he didn't even buy his suit for their wedding. I was kind of confused at the beginning of the chapter because it seemed like Wilson was okay with Tom just doing adult like things with Myrtle.

    1. Wilson is so clueless that he doesn't even know Tom and Myrtle are dating, or so they say.

  7. Myrtle is trying to justify cheating on her husband, with Tom, by talking about her unhappy marriage. She talks about how at the time she was crazy for her husband when they got married but that the crazy has now gone away. Then she accuses of him not being a gentlemen because he didn't even buy his suit for their wedding. She is just trying to gain sympathy and try to make it seem as though getting a divorce would be the best idea, so in the end if tom breaks up with Daisy they can be together, while Wilson is clueless about everything going on.

  8. Myrtle does not like her husband anymore so she tries to portray him as a bad person by telling her friends of his non gentleman actions. Myrtle really wants to be with Tom, but he is with Daisy. It would also be hard for Myrtle to divorce her current husband. Myrtle picks out little things her husband has done, such as borrow his suit for their wedding, and complains about them to her friends.Catherine claims Myrtle was crazy for him at the start of the relationship. Myrtle says she doesn’t know how she fell for a man like him. Myrtle is trying to justify that her husband is not the kind of man a woman should be with. She is probably doing this because later on in the story she might divorce her husband and she wants her friends on her side.

    1. The person who should be talking about a bad husband is poor Daisy. Myrtle, meanwhile, should be running for the hills.

  9. Myrtle talks of her unhappy marriage as if other people should feel bad for her. She makes it seem like she married a bum just because he borrowed a suit for their own wedding. By bad mouthing her husband, she is trying to justify that he is not fit for her and that he's not good enough when in reality she is the one that is being unfaithful.

  10. Myrtle talks about being married to Wilson as if it's a burden. She did say she fell for him, but only for a short time. There was no passion and no real love. She married him because he was a gentlemen. These thoughts are reinforced when she says he borrowed a suit for their wedding. Myrtle thinks that because her relationship isn't something she treasures, it's okay that she isn't faithful to him. I don't think that is justifiable. If she doesn't love him, she shouldn't be with him.

    1. Remember, divorce wasn't so readily available or accepted in the time this novel is set.

  11. Myrtle says that she never was crazy about Wilson, but rather thought that he was a gentleman. When she found out that he wasn't as much of a gentleman as she believed, she regretted the marriage. By telling her friends how unhappy she is with him, she seems to be convincing herself that it is okay for her to sneak around with Tom. She also believes Tom is justified for sneaking around with her because Daisy, Tom's wife, is catholic. This isn't true, but the lie gives enough justification if it is believed to be true.

  12. Myrtle tries to justify her affair by saying that Wilson wasn't the person she thought he was. She claims that she has fallen out of love with Wilson. To make herself feel better she describes how Wilson doesn't treat her right and doesn't give her what she wants when in reality Wilson tries the best he can. Myrtle saying all these things to the party tells me she is trying subconsciously to convince herself that the affair is justifiable. She thinks that because the marriage isn't something she cares about, the affair is okay.

  13. Myrtle talks of her unhappy marriage to Wilson to justify her lack of faithfulness. When talking to Mrs. McKee, she says that she married a man who didn't deserve her and that she had been deceived into thinking he was a gentlemen. She complains like this to make people feel sorry for her so that they might think that her infidelity is justifiable. However, she won't leave her husband, despite her constant complaints and her blatant disregard for matrimony because Tom won't leave Daisy to be with her. So basically, she'll keep cheating and having two men, rather than doing the morally right thing to do and leaving the unhappy marriage and trying to persuade Tom to either leave his marriage with Daisy and be with her, or to be faithful to Daisy.

    1. Divorce wasn't so easy to obtain in the 1920s, especially for a woman.

  14. Myrtle isn't content with her marriage. In a time when wealth and class mattered, she uses the excuse that George isn't a gentleman like she thought he was to hide her underlying belief that George is too poor for her to advance in high society. It's why she's with Tom, to acquire wealth and status for herself. However, Tom isn't leaving Daisy, so Myrtle is at a loss. Perhaps she'll 'take matters into her own hands' to be with Tom (twirl evil mustache).....

  15. Myrtle is trying to justify herself. She feels bad for herself and tries to get pity from other people. While cheating on George, she talks about how sad her marriage is. Myrtle switches her story around and tries to hide some of the truth, saying that she never really loved Tom when she was crazy for him at one point. Maybe they grew apart just because of the fact Myrtle is unhappy with her husband's wealth. She can't stand being poor and she wants a husband who can buy her things.

  16. Myrtle talks of her unhappy marriage so other people will feel bad for her. She makes it seem like she married some terrible lazy guy just because he borrowed a suit for their wedding. she basically is just talking about him behind his back. She is trying to justify that he isn't the guy for her and that he's not good enough. I think she is just trying to make her self look like the victim. That isn't the case though, she is the one being unfaithful, she's in denial.

    1. Yes, she is. And she's picked a poor replacement: a man who hits her.

  17. Myrtle talks of her marriage so people will feel bad for her. her husband borrowed a suit for their wedding so she says he is a bum. She tries to justify that he is not good enough for her, but i think she is the one that is not good enough.

  18. Myrtle complains about her husband, George, and stresses that she is in in a bad marriage to justify the fact that she is cheating. Myrtle says that her first impressions of George were that he was a gentleman. She claims that she was deceived into thinking he was a gentleman, and she tells a story about how she was disgusted when George borrowed a suit for their wedding. Myrtle is in an affair with Tom that her husband is completely oblivious to. Myrtle claims that she was madly in love with Tom, (but the real reason she likes him is because he's rich). Her cover-up for this selfish fact is that she married the wrong man and she wants to be with her real lover. However, she isn't willing to divorce George, and this is a sign that she doesn't actually want Tom for his love.
