Chapter 5
Has Nick been affected by the meeting between Gatsby and Daisy? In what way?

  1. In chapter 5 Nick is starting to question if his relationship with Gatsby is really a friendship. Nick is starting to figure out Gatsby is using him to get closer to Daisy. Gatsby's single goal seems to start an affair with Daisy again and it's probable that at the beginning Nick was only interesting to him because he knew Daisy. By Gatsby starting to build a relationship with Daisy Nick might be feeling obligated to hold back his feelings for her. By Gatsby meeting Daisy, Nick now has to watch his dream girl fall for another man and not him.

    1. Is Gatsby a user? He seems too polite for that, but the evidence points in that direction.

    2. First of all, Daisy is Nick's distant cousin and at no point in the book does he show a romantic affection for her. Nick's romantic interest in The Great Gatsby is Jordan Baker, and even with his interest in her, he still cannot seem to hold on to her (Baker). Daisy is a naturally flirtatious person, and her interactions with her COUSIN Nick are totally normal for her personality type.

  2. I think that Nick is starting to feel a bit abused in this chapter. For one thing, Nick had really admired Gatsby and desired his approval. He probably feels betrayed because Gatsby made it seem as though he wanted to be friends with him. Now, it just seems like it was all an act and Nick is being used as a method for Gatsby to get together with Daisy. Also, Nick appeared to be develpoing feelings for Daisy as well, but he is now forced to watch her flirt with Gatsby instead of himself.

    1. Remember, Daisy and Nick are related, albeit distantly. He is courting his professional golfer.

  3. Nick feels used, he's been trying so hard for Gatsby to like him and now that he finally has some of sort of friendship it's blowing up in his face. I think he feels like Gatsby only see him as one of those money-grubbing people that go to his parties when Nick really wants to be his friend. I didn't like how Gatsby kind of payed him off for helping his meeting with Daisy. He went out of his way to get Daisy to Gatsby's house then when they get there, Gatsby starts acting funny then both him and Daisy just ignores Nick. All of it is just sad, I hope their friendship works out.

    1. Has Nick been trying that hard to get Gatsby to like him? He's been going to work, conducting his own business. Gatsby seems like he's trying to develop the friendship with Nick, but possibly only to use Nick to maneuver closer to Daisy.

  4. I felt that Nick was reluctant to help Gatsby reunite with Daisy, since he cares for her. I don't believe that Nick loves her romantically, but he does seem to care about her, especially due to way her abusive and unfaithful husband treats her. Nick, while he has a greater idea of Gatsby's not quite so benevolent personality (pg. 90), wants to be a friend to Gatsby. The meeting between Gatsby and Daisy was very awkward in the beginning, and one gets a sense that Nick desperately wanted to leave the two. There were a few worries that he had about Gatsby and his possibly unrealistic view of Daisy (pg. 95). Throughout the reunion Nick was like the third wheel to a very personal affair and in the end he decides to leave them.

    1. Yes, Gatsby and Daisy become comfortable in each other's company rather quickly after their initial awkwardness.

  5. Nick is feeling used in this chapter because he thought that he was becoming friends with Gatsby. Then when he gets Gatsby and Daisy together they forget that Nick is there. I think that Nick thought that if he brought both of them together it would help their friendship. But then in the end he walks away feeling sad because they ignored him. I think that Gatsby really doesn't want a friend he just needed an excuse to see Daisy.

    1. Or perhaps Nick is sad because he's helped to orchestrate an extramarital affair.

  6. I think that Nick feels that he may be doing what is best for Daisy because of the fact that Tom is abusive and cheats on Daisy. I think he was reluctant to get involved because he doesn't want to be associated with helping Daisy cheat on Tom since they are kind of friends. I think that he did though because he wants Daisy to be happy. After this Nick has more of a role in the friendship between him and Gatsby because this made Gatsby seem less perfect and more vulnerable.

    1. Despite all those riches, Gatsby is at heart just an insecure man trying to win back his girlfriend.

  7. I think that Nick is not only feeling used but I think is actually getting used. Nick loves Daisy but so does Gatsby. Gatsby is building a friendship with Nick with the probable motive of getting closer to Daisy. Nick was so happy to become friends with Gatsby because he admires him. Now Nick seems upset because the man he admires so much is using him to get to his dream girl. Although Daisy is married to Tom, both Gatsby and Nick want her. It is difficult for the more passive Nick to see Gatsby actually try to get Daisy when he couldn't.

  8. Nick is feeling somewhat left out and getting used in this chapter because he thought that he was becoming friends with Gatsby, then Gatsby and Daisy get together they forget that Nick is there. I think that Nick thought that if he brought both of them together it would help their friendship, but that didn't happen at at all. Nick ended up leaving them. I think that Gatsby just wanted an excuse to see Daisy, I think Nick might also be jealous because for so long he wanted to become friends with Gatsby and now he has his dream girl.

    1. To be fair, Nick tried to leave several times, but Gatsby and Daisy urged him to stay.

  9. Nick is beginning to wonder whether he and Gatsby are really friends. He is trying to figure out if Gatsby is only using him in order to reunite with Daisy. I think that they could still be good friends, if Gatsby does not forget about Nick. We still don't know what job Gatsby wants Nick to do, but this task could be a test of friendship or a simple business opportunity that Gatsby wants Nick to do so he doesn't have to.

  10. It's obvious to Nick that Gatsby was using him to get to Daisy, he was just a little hurt by it, it seems. Nick admired the man and maybe set his expectations of Gatsby too high, like in the car ride where he felt disappointed by the conversation. Also, Gatsby's reaction to Daisy must have made a different impression on him. The realization that a man's dream was coming true after five years of wishing must've been something magical to witness. Maybe Nick will bond with them both, having been a part of it.

  11. I feel like Gatsby is trying to use Nick to win over Daisy and Nick is not happy about because he thought that they were going to be friends. Although Nick also has feelings for Daisy too. So now Nick is going to have to stand and watch a girl that he likes trying to be won over by his new friend that is just using him.

  12. I think in this chapter, Nick realizes Gatsby is using him a little bit. Gatsby doesn't want to be his friendly neighbor, he wouldn't give a care for him if Nick wasn't somehow connected to the girl he loves. I was pretty happy Nick was able to see through that. The whole Daisy and Gatsby meeting was a really awkward scene, especially for Nick, and that made him annoyed with Gatsby- especially because he refused to let him leave. Nick ended up being a third wheel. Still, I think Nick is pleased that Gatsby pays him attention to him. Gatsby is Nick's window to a sophisticated lifestyle.

    1. How will Nick react when he learns that most of what he thought he knew about Gatsby is a lie?

  13. Nick has the feeling that Gatsby just wants to be friends with him just so he can get close with Daisy again. Nick isn't too upset, but he seems annoyed of the fact that Gatsby might just be using him. When Gatsby and daisy finally start to show feelings for each other again, Nick is right beside them getting ignored. It seems like Nick has to pick between the friendship with Gatsby whom he looks up to, or Daisy, the girl he is starting to get feelings for.

    1. Gatsby is using Nick, yes, but does that mean that Gatsby can't also be sincerely his friend?

  14. The beginning of the chapter is weird, in that Gatsby is offering all these favors to try to get Nick to help him see Daisy. Nick agrees to invite Daisy for tea but seems to realize how Gatsby is being manipulative. Nick is in a really awkward position because he quickly becomes a third wheel. Gatsby and Daisy don't hit it off at first, but after a little while they seem to be having a ball together. Gatsby invites Nick and Daisy over so that he can show off his possessions, and he calls in Klipspringer for some entertainment. By this point Nick is completely ignored and feels like he has been used - so he leaves.

Gatsby is in major violation of the bro code. Nick did him a big favor by setting him up with the girl he was too afraid to talk to on his own. Then Gatsby gives Daisy his full attention once Nick has gotten him what he wants. On top of this, Nick cares for Daisy and has some feelings for her, yet he was still willing to set Gatsby up to talk to her. He is being a huge bro (good friend). Gatsby leaves nick feeling pretty dejected. It would feel pretty awful to hook up a guy you thought was a good friend with a girl YOU like, then find out that's all he wanted you for. Gatsby needs to obey the golden rule (Bros before ..., you know).

  15. I feel like Nick was reluctant to help Gatsby rekindle his relationship with Daisy, since he cares for her (though not romantically). This seems especially true because of the Tom way abuses her and cheats on her. Nick wants to be a friend to Gatsby and help him, even though he's starting to realize that Gatsby isn't quite what he appears to be. As the reuniting of Daisy and Gatsby is underway, you can tell Nick feels very awkward, especially because he feels a little guilty about helping Daisy cheat on Tom (even though Tom is doing the same). Also, Nick feels like a third wheel and finally leaves them to their privacy.

    1. Yet to be fair, when Nick asked if he should leave, Gatsby and Daisy urged him to stay. Still, they probably do want to be alone.
